Painting Inspiration

Kimberly works in several mediums, and she likes creating in multiple layers to add depth and richess.   This painting is made by creating of layers of medium in three different media.  First, encautic paint is used on paper.  Encaustic is an ancient painting medium of hot wax and pigment that is "burned into" its grounds with either a heat gun or blow torch.  The word encaustic is derived from from the Greek word enkaustikos which means "to burn in," and heat is required for a painting to be called encaustic.  Then alcohol inks are added to create depth and add more intense color to the melted wax.  Finally, watercolor is used to fill in areas where white paper is still left, and it leaves a contrast around the melted wax.  The wax acts as a "resist" so that the watercolor only goes where the wax is not.  By creating layers, Kimberly evokes the symbolism that our lives are full of layers and multiple journeys.

Artist's Statement

In a world where dreams and life merge and flow, where reality and the surreal morph into one, Kimberly Franklin's work is metaphor for life.  And, as in life, vessels are a simple symbol of the human experience.  "Peas" are a simple symbol of so many things, as they are in a pod, a vessel.  Our bodies are vessels which inhabit our souls.  Continuously evolving, the soul, in its vessel, is transformed on its constant journey to the summit.  We encounter experiences that transform us along the way.  And even though the journey can be frightening, we are safe and protected by the ultimate ubiquitous Vessel.

Artist's Biography

Landlocked by the prairies, foothills, and mountains of the suburban 1970’s Denver, Kimberly Franklin (born Kimberly Tracy) was always mesmerized by color and creativity since her early childhood.  And she was always creating something from costumes to handmade books and drawings, as art and expression was ubiquitous to her world from the beginning.

In college, Kim attended the University of New Mexico and studied Biology and Chemistry, which fascinated her.  She became particularly enamored with the intricate, pattern-filled cellular structures under a microscope, all throughout nature, and forms within the human body.  Her two favorite hobbies became her marine aquarium, which was teeming with life, colors and floating mysteries, and her sketchbook.

Then there were her surroundings with the dry yet colorful deserts of New Mexico.  She became captivated by Georgia O'Keeffe's flowing and folded flowers, sumptuous undulating landscapes of bending hills and splendid color and light.  After finally taking formal art classes, she found the colors, patterns and forms from Biology articulated now in her artwork.  But, it wasn't until her move to Florida's Gulf Coast for graduate school, where she was transformed and so were here paintings.

Flowing, colorful and ethereal, Kim Franklin's work conveys a sensation of life, color tranquility and of stillness.  Her use of mixed media enhances the experience and adds depth and form to every painting.  The ebb and flow of life from landscape to ocean has shaped her artistic language and vision.  In her own worlds, "these rich experiences and relics have found their way into my dreams and onto my canvases."

May these paintings transform you as much as they have transformed me.
