Religious Connections to Amethyst
While there are many different opinions about whether there are true healing properties of stones, there is a history in different religions. In the Catholic church from the first recording in A.D. 610, Bishops have worn a ring to denote their special office. At that time, the Bishops' rings were designed around a single central focal stone, which was a ruby, an emerald, or a sapphire, and the stone was not engraved. Eventually, it was the amethyst's luminous quality, its colorful play of violet light, and its symbolic protection which became the reason for its selection as a "protective stone" worn by Bishops. The violet color was also supposedly symbolic of the Bishops' role as a man of God and his compassionate qualities. Many of these Bishops have chosen to have the Diocesan Seal carved into the amethyst of their ring.
In the Hebrew tradition according to Josephus (A.D. 37-95), Divine miraculous qualities were thought to be found in the stones of the breastplates worn by the high priests of the Temple. In this breastplate were twelve stones, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and arranged in four rows to represent the four seasons. In this breastplate, the amethyst was the ninth stone in the third row of the twelve stones or gems set into it. These stones also had additional meaning as the twelve angels who guard the gates of Paradise as described in the Hebrew scriptures.
Some scholars also note that the biblical reference of New Jerusalem will be built out of 12 layers of precious stones, and all of them were chosen for their calming, grounding, and spiritual properties. Some people believe it will amethyst.
Regardless of these religious uses, amethyst is truly a lovely crystal of purple light that will make you feel divine! Enjoy some amethyst crystal earrings and see what we mean!
