The History of Spirals and Curls
What is the history of spirals? One of the most enigmatic geometrical designs found everywhere worldwide is the spiral found on numerous rocks, ancient sculptures, boulders, cave dwellings, and at burial sites. Many cultures believe that the spiral symbolizes eternity, nature, and spiritual transformation.
The Celtic & Norse people have been well known to use spirals in their art, design, fashions, jewelry, weapons, and religious objects. For Celts, the double spiral, sculptured, engraved, or drawn on stone, was the symbol of the creation of the Universe, and many can be found at the tomb-sanctuary at Newgrange, Ireland. Another Celtic spiral symbol indicates "breath" or "breath of life" and has even been borrowed for use in marketing a popular pharmaceutical inhaler for COPD called "Spiriva".
In Aboriginal culture, the circle and the spiral are metaphors for a "never-ending journey" of discovery. The Aboriginal people have for millennia used artistic designs and symbols to share their stories and history, which are incredibly important in their culture, and the spiral is just one of them. For the Maori people of New Zealand, the spiral symbolizes growth, development and new beginnings, and it is commonly found in the Maori’s facial tattooing.
In a Native American Culture, a Hohokam petroglyph is found at Saguaro National Monument in Arizona, and it is believed that the carved spiral symbolizes water.
But the true connection between this carving and the Hokoham culture which occupied the region of present-day Tucson and Phoenix is still a mystery. Prehistoric petroglyphs in Colombia are decorated with both clockwise and counterclockwise spirals and most of them have been found at altitudes lower than 2,600 meters above sea level.
Spirals were also found in other cultures including ancient Persian culture, ancient Oriental culture, and even in Europe. The ancient Romans and Greeks used spirals as designs for vases and the columns in temples.
The Beauty and Meaning of Spirals
Today the meaning of spirals is as varied as whom you ask.
