Pearls, have been highly revered, collected, and cherished throughout the ages long, long before written history, and they are loved in the modern era as well. Many people believe that pearls were first discovered by people searching for food along the shore, but pearls have been found everywhere in the world.  Because they are among the oldest known gemstones, ancient Chinese, ancient Romans, ancient Persians, and others have left pearl artifacts dating back to at least 2300 BC.  Many of these relics can be found at the Louvre. 

At the onset of the 20th century, pearls were all natural but difficult to retrieve requiring dangerous sea dives.  Pearls became a very valuable commodity in the Persian Gulf, as there are a vast amount of natural pearl beds there.  Now almost all pearls are cultured, with natural pearls being among the rarest of gems and being found only off the Bahrain and Australian coasts.
