While the black spinel is not a well known gemstone, good specimens can attain very high prices. When found in its bright red variety, it is also known as the Ruby Spinel. Historically, there was no distinction between true Rubiesand Ruby Spinel, as they looked identical and were found in similar areas. In addition, many royal crown jewels thought to be Ruby Spinels, and in fact, the Black Prince’s Ruby on the British Imperial State Crown is a 170-carat red Spinel. The creation process starts first with detailed sketches which are then carefully and intricately hand-engineered with gold, silver and semi-precious gems and pearls. Black gemstone earrings like these are first made by hammering gold or silver into drop-shapes and then adding the “seed” gems or beads. This particular pair is made by “weaving” the tiny black spinel gems and bronze pearls into the shape you see which creates a very “lacy” or “crocheted” effect which can resemble filigree and becomes a very intricate attribute. These black gemstone earrings are wrapped with black spinel and bronze pearls, and they are about 1-1/2″ long. Available in either 14K gold-filled, rose gold-filled, or sterling silver. This piece is entirely handmade by Calico Juno Designs in their studio in New York City.
