HISTORY OF CANDLES
Candles have been used for millennia by many different groups of ancient peoples around the world. One of the earliest known civilizations to use candles were the Ancient Egyptians who supposedly dipped papyrus into beeswax to create torches in around 5000 BC. These early candles were “wickless,” but the ancient Romans were purportedly the first to use an ancient form of “wicked’ candle to light their homes, ceremonies, and travel. Early Asian cultures like the Chinese have been found to use molded paper tubes with seeds and insect oils as the fuel. Nut wax was used by the Japanese in a similar way. The ancient Jews used candles to celebrate their religious festival of lights of Hanukkah in 165 BC.
PROPERTIES OF DIFFERENT WAXES
While any kind of oil can be made into wax, it is important to find suitable oil sources for burning in candles for many reasons including not only production reasons and costs, but also for health and sustainability reasons. In addition to this, releasing and holding fragrance is an important aesthetic reason as well!
While paraffin wax is inexpensive and burns wells, it is byproduct product of the oil industry, and thus could produce unhealthy airborne chemicals. Yet, most people have no issue with paraffin candles, and they are widely used in the candle industry due to their duration of burn-time, their ability to diffuse fragrance, and due to their affordability and low cost. Palm Wax has wonderful burning properties, but has been frowned upon because of its tendency to cause deforestation. Soy Wax burns slowly, and therefore has trouble throwing fragrances. While it is inexpensive as a byproduct of the huge soybean industry, agricultural giants such as Monsanto have alleged issues with using soy that is genetically modified. In addition, many scientists have concerns regarding the pesticides and fertilizers that may be found in soy wax and emitted in the fumes when burned. Beeswax is produced from honeybees and is the component of their beehives. Its smell is fragrant like honey with a golden color, but it does not incorporate other fragrances well.
COCONUT OIL CANDLES COCO
Coconut Wax is supreme in the candle industry because it has all-natural, renewable, clean-burning properties, and it diffuses and releases fragrance beautifully. But Coconut candles an be more costly, which can deter some from experience the beautiful miracle of candlelight.
