Birthstone for the month of July, onyx is commonly used to mean “black stones” in a general fashion. But Onyx is one of the most popular types of agate, which in turn, is a type of chalcedony. Specifically, Onyx is the type of agate that refers to that which has alternating layers of black and white, but can also include layers of red.
